I went shopping the other day at my local fresh produce store that carries a lot of organic fruits and vegetables. My friend came along for the walk. When we were shopping she said "I don't trust organic food, there's no regulations about what can be sold as organic". She then proceeded to the non-organic section and bought an apple there instead because she didn't trust the organic apple. This is some of the screwiest logic I have ever heard. She would rather buy an apple that is guaranteed to have had a host of known carcinogenic pesticides and toxic substances sprayed on them than one that doesn't (or at the very least has "less").
These pesticides and chemicals not only do obvious harm like make the soil toxic but cause developmental problems in children, are known cancer-causing agents, are known hormone disrupters and also cause acute pesticide poisoning. Do we still have to tell people this, in 2010? There are regulations for organic products in Canada and Canadian Organic Growers are active and committed. One of our most important cancer preventative efforts should be to eliminate pesticides and chemicals from our food. This is common sense and is backed by a plethora of factual information available to anyone who is interested in informing themselves.
The bottom line is that my friend trusts the food that has been sprayed with pesticides and doesn't trust food that has not been sprayed. Sorry Denise (my friend), this is not only an attitude based on ignorance of the facts but it's just plain stupid, nonsensical logic.
